At Embody Counselling, I use somatic therapy, a powerful approach to healing trauma by focusing on the body’s natural ability to restore balance. Trauma is universal because we all share a nervous system. Whether we are aware of it or not, trauma leaves imprints on our bodies, and healing it requires more than just talking through it or thinking our way out. Somatic therapy harnesses the body’s wisdom to process and release trauma—working from the "bottom up."
Research shows that bottom-up approaches, which focus on the body and nervous system, are more effective in trauma healing than cognitive, top-down methods. Trauma isn’t just a memory in the mind; it lives in the body—within our muscles, tissues, and nervous system. When we experience trauma, our nervous system can become dysregulated, holding onto sensations and emotions from past events, even when those events are long over.
Somatic therapy offers a compassionate way to access and release these stored sensations. The goal isn’t to relive the trauma but to create enough safety in the present moment to sit with those bodily sensations in a supported environment. When we can truly feel and process the sensations that have been stuck or unprocessed, we create a new embodied experience. This embodied shift changes the way our nervous system and neural pathways function, allowing for deeper healing.
At Embody Counselling, somatic therapy involves a collaborative, gentle approach where we track sensations, shifts, and responses in your body. This helps to restore safety, trust, and connection within yourself, which is essential for long-lasting healing.
By integrating body-based practices into trauma recovery, we can release the tension, fear, and overwhelm that the body has held onto—creating space for growth, vitality, and calm. Somatic therapy helps you reclaim an embodied sense of safety and wellbeing, supporting you on your journey toward healing and wholeness.
